Background of the Study
Grassroots language planning involves community-led initiatives that aim to preserve and promote indigenous languages from the bottom up. In Calabar, Efik language preservation has benefited from local efforts such as cultural festivals, language clubs, and community-run media that emphasize the use of Efik in everyday life. These initiatives complement top-down governmental policies by fostering community ownership and pride in the Efik language. Grassroots planning leverages local knowledge, traditional practices, and cultural events to create sustainable language practices that resonate with community members. Through participatory approaches, stakeholders develop localized strategies that include language workshops, storytelling sessions, and digital content creation in Efik. Such efforts not only preserve linguistic heritage but also promote intergenerational transmission of language and culture. Statement of the Problem
Although grassroots language planning has been widely promoted as a means of preserving Efik in Calabar, its overall impact remains uncertain. Challenges such as limited funding, insufficient technical support, and sporadic community participation often undermine these local initiatives. This study seeks to address the gap by evaluating the effectiveness of grassroots language planning on Efik preservation and identifying key factors that either facilitate or hinder success.
